3 Simple Tips To Stop Hunger On The Paleo Diet!

I hear it time and time again with new clients, they've started eating paleo but they're always hungry! I get it! Getting your nutrition on track, cutting out junk foods, and replacing them with whole foods can be a tough transition for most people. It's even worse when you're hungry all the time. After all, those chips, cookies, and pizza look a lot more appetizing then they ever have before when you're starving on your new diet. How the hell are you going to follow a paleo diet if you're miserable and craving foods like no tomorrow?

Fear not! It's not that they're anything wrong with you, or that the diet isn't working. You just need to make a few simple changes that will nip that hunger in the butt! These 3 tips are based on really common mistakes I see time and time again with my personal clients. I'm sure they can help you too!

These 3 simple tips will help stop your hunger when transitioning to eating paleo!

1. Eat more food:

I know what you're thinking, "How the heck am I going to lose weight if I'm eating more food?". Well funny enough, under eating can actually cause you to hold onto body fat and lot of people under eat when they start eating paleo. Under eating can put your body in a state where it believes it's starving, this leads to it slowing down your metabolism and holding onto body fat. It doesn't want to let go of that reserve body fat because it needs it to keep you alive during what it perceives as a time where food is scarce.

Eating too little will also produce a little side effect called ... you guessed it, hunger! Not only does eating too little trick your body into holding onto stored body fat, it also leaves you hungry. Do your self a favour, eat as much paleo friendly veggies, fruits, meat, fats, and nut/seeds as needed to satisfy your hunger and stop before you're stuffed.  This is the same basic advice I give to all new clients who are just starting out on the paleo diet. Snacks also tend to be a problem, most people stick to just fruit and veggies. Try adding nuts in to your snacks to help beef them up and make them more satisfying.

If you're thinking that you need to eat 1200 calories a day to lose weight, you're just doing yourself more harm than good. If you're only eating one egg and some fruit at breakfast, boost that up 2 eggs, bacon, and fruit. If you're eating 1/2 a chicken breast and a light salad for dinner, eat the whole breast and add avocado to your salad. Eat more!

2. Eat more fat:

This is a big one! Many people drastically reduce their fat intake (knowingly or unknowingly) when they begin eating paleo. Why? Because they don't want to get fat! Well guess what, fats don't make you fat. They're not the bad guy and you need them.

When people cut out fat they end up eating a lot of low calorie veggies/fruit and a decent amount of protein. This leaves them hungry and grumpy ... and no one wants to be around someone who's hungry and grumpy! Further more, a lack of fats in your diet can lead to a lack of energy and  reduced mental clarity. Your body needs fats, your brain is primarily made up of fat! You body enjoys using fat as a source of energy, it will switch to running on fat as it's main fuel when you reduce your carb content greatly.

Increased fat intake will also help you feel more satisfied after a meal and keep you satisfied much longer between meals. This means no spike and crash after meals and you'll be able to last for hours between meals. Fat's also yield a lot of calories per gram, meaning they'll help you bump those calories up and not under eat! How do you do this? Simple! Olive oil on salad, butter in coffee, coconut milk on fruit are just a few ideas. What fat's should you be adding into your diet? Here's a few!

- Butter (real butter, not margarine)
- Avocado
- Coconut Oil (virgin)
- Palm Oil
- Olive Oil
- Coconut Milk (full fat, duh!)
-  Nuts (almonds, walnuts, pecans, cashews etc.)

3. Eat more protein:

I don't know why, but some people forget the part of the paleo diet that suggest healthy portions of meat. Fresh cuts of red meat, chicken, fish, sea food, pork, and eggs deliver a large amount of protein. Protein (as I'm sure you know) is a building block for lean muscle. The more lean muscle you have the more energy is needed to maintain that muscle and the more body fat you can burn. Protein, much like fat, also helps keep you feeling full and satisfied after meals. It also helps keep you feeling satisfied for a longer period of time between meals.

Meat is also loaded with various essential nutrients. For example, red meat is rich in iron and B12, fish is a good source of omega 3 fatty acids, and all fresh cuts of meat also come with a healthy dose of fats making it a "two for one" deal! Meat, being high in protein and fat, is also very calorie dense. This means it will up your over all calorie content for the day, leading you to not be under fed. Each one of your meals should contain a protein source, preferably from some kind of meat.

I know that some people have a hard time eating more animal products, or they don't enjoy certain kinds of meat. That's ok, we're all different and you can still get quality added protein into your diet with a little added supplementation. A quality whey protein powder (nothing fancy) from a clean/reputable source would go a long way towards adding extra protein into your diet. If you're the kind of person that enjoys a morning smoothie for breakfast, try adding a scoop of protein to round it out as a meal and increase calorie content. While protein powder does come in handy, it's no replacement for actual meat! I would suggest the protein powder as an additive to shakes/smoothies, but the majority of your protein should come from actual cuts of meat.

3 Exercises To Eliminate Wrist Pain

Wrist pain is one of the most common issues that I run into with clients on a daily basis. I would honestly say that 1 out of 4 people that I've worked with have an issue with their wrists. Most of the time they experience wrist pain or discomfort during any sort of exercise that causes extension and weight baring. This means push ups, mountain climbers, burpees, crawling, and a handful of other exercises all aggravate their issue.

If this sounds like you, don't worry! You don't have to stop doing any of the above exercises. Wrist pain doesn't have to prevent you from getting a great workout, and the steps to help ease or eliminate it are quite simple! Today we'll take a look at 3 simple exercises to help you eliminate your wrist pain.

These exercises are for those of you who I assume haven't had any type of wrist injury. If you have, be sure to check with a doctor before performing any of the exercises below.

 1. Wrist Mobility Routines

Many people have tight muscles and fascia. Guess what, if you're hamstrings feel tight, your calves are tight, your shoulders are tense ... your forearms and wrists are most likely tight as well. This means you need to be addressing that issue and opening them back up! I always recommend that everyone perform a daily fascial release routine (foam rolling, using a lacrosse ball etc.) and a stretching/mobility routine for their whole body. Working on your posture, opening up tight areas of the body, and strengthening the weaker muscle groups is a must! Your wrists are no different. For starters, try using this wrist mobility routine in your warm ups and every morning.

2. Try Using Your Fists

If push ups, mountain climbers, and other exercises that force you to put weight on your extended wrists cause you pain, try performing them on your fists. When you do these exercises using your fist as the base it will align the wrist with the forearm and eliminate any extension. Most people find this stops their wrist pain and discomfort immediately! If you're on a hard wood floor you might want to use a towel or mat under your fists. Check out a much younger me in this early video describing how this is done!

3. Hang & Build Your Grip Strength

Grip strength is an often over looked aspect of training. Not only is grip strength functionally useful on a day to day basis (carrying groceries, opening up jars etc.) it's also been tied to longer life expectancy. By strengthening the muscles and tendons that surround the wrist you'll be creating a more stable joint. Many people find that this was actually the problem all along! I've written an entire blog piece on how to build some serious grip strength, you might want to take a look. But, one of the easiest methods for creating basic grip strength, and improving shoulder health/mobility, is the passive hang! The passive hang is simple, find something to hang on, grip it around shoulder width apart, palms facing outward, and hang! Let your shoulders relax and "hug" your ears. Let your body hang loose. Try hanging for as long as possible! Do this multiple times throughout the day, time yourself each time, and try to work up to 4-5 mins throughout the day. You could also throw them into the end or beginning of your workouts and do 3 sets of hanging for as long as you can. Rest 30 seconds between sets.

Give these 3 simple wrist exercises a try, and watch your pain disappear! For some of you it could minutes, others it might take weeks or longer, but hang in there. Before you know it, you're tight and weak wrists will be a thing of the past!

Is Eating Gluten Free Making You Fat?

Gluten is a protein found in most grains that give grain products that chewy and satisfying consistency. Taking on a gluten free diet is popular at the moment for a variety of reasons. The main reason people eliminate gluten from their diet is for digestive and allergic reasons. Lately it seems like everyone and their mother is gluten intolerant! Weather or not all the people who are adopting a gluten free diet are actually gluten intolerant, or just jumping on the band wagon, is an argument for another day!

The second reason a lot of people are adopting a gluten free diet is because they believe it will help them lose weight. While it can be effective for helping you lose weight to adopt a gluten free diet, you'll only lose the weight if you're eating the right gluten free foods. If you're not eating the right gluten free foods, it's a recipe for disaster and weight gain! Check out the video above for more details!

How To Make Bone Broth, And Why You Should!

In the upcoming months you're going to be hearing more and more about bone broth. You know ... the stuff your grandmother made for soups with the left over bones from your chicken dinners! Bone broth isn't anything new, in fact it's a very old concept. The reason you'll be hearing more and more about it on blogs, websites, and in the news is because of it's outstanding nutritional benefits.

Bone broth is made by slowly boiling the bones of animals over a period of hours in order to extract not only their flavour, but also the nutrients from the bones, cartilage, and fats. By making and drinking bone broth you'll be taking in a ton of great vitamins, minerals, and nutrients for just pennies. In fact, it would be pretty expensive to buy everything that you got from drinking bone broth in supplement form. Plus, drinking a cup of delicious and warm bone broth is a lot more enjoyable than taking some pills! Bone broth provides a large array of amino acids (Arginine, Glutamine, Glycine, Proline) essential for immune function, recovery, gut health, and healthy joints to name a few. Bone broth also gives your body easy access to magnesium, gelatin, calcium, collagen in a form it can digest without issue.

Magnesium is very important for recovery for anyone who lives an active lifestyle or trains hard regularly. Most people are lacking in magnesium and could use a little more.
Gelatin helps with joint health and pain while also provides bone building minerals. Gelatin also helps the body absorb protein and can help with the symptoms of leaky gut.
Calcium is important for the health and density of your bones. For those who are dairy sensitive, bone broth provides a great option for taking in calcium.
Collagen is excellent for improving skin health and the appearance of healthy skin. Collagen can also help people suffering from bowel disorders (IBS, crones) and other digestive issues.

Making bone broth is simple and doesn't even require you to be kitchen savvy! The only thing it takes is patience. Making bone broth can take around 20-24 hours! Trust me, it's worth the wait.

 Here's what you'll need ...

- 4-6 large beef soup bones raw
- 2-4 pork short ribs or neck bones (optional)
- 2-3 carrots chopped in big chunks
- 2 large onions chopped in half
- 6-7 garlic cloves cut in half
- Salt & pepper

How To Put It Together ...

- Place your chopped veggies in the bottom of a large pot or slow cooker
- Take your bones and place them on top of the veggies in the pot
- Fill the pot or slow cooker with water until full and the water covers everything
- Heat on low until the water begins to rumble
- Remove any scum that rises to the top with a spoon, these are impurities you don't want
- Leave it to simmer for 20-24 hours on low
- Once the 20-24 hours is up, scoop out all the solids with a spoon and filter the broth strainer
- Salt and pepper to taste
- When the broth has cooled enough, place the pot into the fridge and allow it to fully cool off
- A hard layer of fat will form on the top of the broth, remove the fat and throw it out
- You'll now be left with a big pot of "jello like" broth, that's what you want! Warm up a cup in a pot      and enjoy!
- You can keep it in the fridge for up to 7 days
- You can also freeze it in individual servings to keep it for up to 6 months

There you have it, simple and easy to make bone broth! In a few hours you can be enjoying a nice cup of your own and being doing something your body will love.

A New Year, But Not A New You!

It's that time of year again! Endless amounts of people take to their Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram and declare their set of New Years resolutions. Maybe you're one of them! More often than not, one or more of these resolutions have to do with losing weight, looking better, eating well, attaining some kind of new fitness skill / PR. Then it's usually followed up with that oh so original saying (sarcasm) "It's a New Year, Time For A New You!".

 Stop, just stop.

Yes it's a New Year, but there is no "New You" and you didn't have to wait for the New Year to actually make a change.

It's great that you're looking to make changes in your life for the better. It's an excellent choice to take control of your life and start training with purpose, eating whole foods, and assessing your weaknesses. But it's going to take more than the year changing over to a new one on a calender to make you follow through on those promises to yourself.

Ever wonder why so many people say they're going to lose weight, watch what they eat, drink less, and at the end of the next year they're still where they were last time? It's because New Years resolutions don't work and they're just a sexy fantasy. Seriously, do you really think your whole prospective on life, work ethic, and bad habits will all do a 180 as soon as the clock strikes midnight? No, of course you don't! So why lie to yourself? Why wait until midnight on a certain date to start?

Real lasting changes are made by following small steps, laid out in a realistic action plan, with a clear goal in mind. Bad habits are not cured over night, and new positive habits are not formed in a week. It takes consistent effort, will power, and some times a little sacrifice to create lasting change.

Every single day you wake up is a chance to start on the path to better habits. Every single day could be a step in a better direction. You don't need to wait for anyone or anything, you can start right now. Rome wasn't built in a day, and neither are real lasting changes in your life.  Best of all, they don't have to be that difficult and you don't have to set lofty goals at first, start small.

For example, you need to lose weight but you're diet isn't so great, you're not training often, and you drink too much. Start small by committing to training 2-3 times per week. Plan on having only 4 "cheat/reward" meals a month. Commit to only allowing yourself 4 drinks per week or try 2 weeks without any alcohol. Work towards those goals diligently and meet them. Then step it up a notch. Commit to training 3-4 times per week, only have 2 cheat meals per month, and avoiding alcohol for 1 whole month. Meet those goals, and then set new ones, bigger ones, better ones ... but still manageable.

Small changes, adjusted over time, make the gap towards your goal a more manageable feat. This makes your goals a reality. This is how you start becoming a much better version of you ... not a "new you". Don't lie to yourself, stop feeling terrible, and start acting on your goals now. Make the changes, put in the work, track your progress, and set small goals. Reach those goals, conquer them, and move onto new things. Do this, and you'll love where you are next year when everyone else is still making excuses and new "resolutions".

If you're unsure of how to start, where to start, or you need help achieving your goals, there are always options. Seeking out professional advice and guidance from a skilled fitness coach is a great place to start.
